Postpartum Recovery Myths Every Mom Should Know

The postpartum season is one of the most tender and transformative times in a woman’s life. It’s often called the “fourth trimester,” a period marked by healing, bonding, and learning a new rhythm. Unfortunately, it’s also a time clouded by unrealistic expectations and myths that can leave new moms feeling overwhelmed or like they’re doing something wrong.

As a midwife and a mother, I want to clear up some of the most common postpartum myths and remind you that your healing journey is unique, valid, and worthy of attention.

Myth #1: “You’ll bounce back in six weeks.”

In fact, any notion of this term “bounce-back” is bullshit. Plain and simple. The very common six-week postpartum visit often makes it seem like healing is complete by that time. The truth? Recovery looks different for every mom, and while some may feel physically well at six weeks, others may still be experiencing fatigue, discomfort, or hormonal changes months later. Healing is not linear, and it doesn’t follow a calendar.

The truth: Your body has done an incredible job growing and birthing a baby. Give yourself time, grace, and patience as you recover. Start slow… leaving the house, socializing, exercise, intimacy, etc. Just take it one step at a time.

Myth #2: “Postpartum hair loss is just something you have to live with.”

Yes, postpartum hair loss is common due to hormonal shifts, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do to support your body. Gentle scalp massage, nutrient-dense foods, and natural hair products can help promote regrowth and keep your scalp healthy.

The truth: Supporting your body with rest, nutrition, and natural care (like my Regrow Hair Serum) can make a real difference.

Myth #3: “Everyone gets the baby blues.”

The first couple of weeks postpartum can bring emotional ups and downs, often referred to as the “baby blues.” But if feelings of sadness, anxiety, or overwhelm continue beyond those first weeks, it may be more than the blues. Postpartum depression and anxiety are real, and they deserve compassionate care.

The truth: You’re not failing… you’re human. If your emotions feel heavy or unmanageable, reach out to your provider or a trusted friend. You do not have to walk this road alone. In fact, it’s preferred that you don’t.

Myth #4: “If you’re breastfeeding, you can’t use anything on your skin.”

While it’s important to be mindful of ingredients, many safe and natural remedies can bring comfort during the postpartum stage. Herbal balms, teas, and soothing soaks can nurture your body while being gentle enough for you and your baby.

The truth: With the right products, you can care for yourself and your baby at the same time. That’s exactly why I created my entire line of postpartum care products. Just stick to the basics!

Myth #5: “It’s all about baby.”

This might be the biggest myth of all. While your baby’s needs are important, so are yours. The postpartum time is about both of you: your healing, your rest, your nourishment, and your bond.

The truth: Taking care of yourself is taking care of your baby. You matter too.

Final Thoughts

Postpartum recovery isn’t about bouncing back - ugh, can we just get rid of this term altogether?! Postpartum recovery is about moving forward with care, patience, and support. Every mother’s journey looks different, and that’s exactly how it’s meant to be.

If you’re walking through this season right now, remember: give yourself grace, surround yourself with support, and take one small step at a time.

Blessings,
Carley
